Dub poet Levi Tafari is still giving Liverpool the news
‘People want to hear about what’s happening’
Dear readers — If you’re from here or you’ve been around for a second, ‘Levi Tafari’ is unlikely to be a new name to you. After all, the British-Jamaican dub poet is — quite rightly — everywhere: his name’s on the floor of Central Library, his image adorns at least one large mural and last year he became one of Liverpool’s latest Citizens of Honour. So it was only a matter of time before our resident poetry devotee, Ophira Gottlieb, caught up with Levi to talk about how his verse has changed over the years and the way atrocities like police violence against Toxteth’s Black community impacted his life and his relationship with the city.
