Dear members — I have to begin with a confession. 

Backing up: Hello! I’m Shannon, a new editor here at the Post; I’ll also be working on our sister publication, the Manchester Mill. Now, onto my crimes. I wrote the introduction to Ophira’s delightful piece last week on ‘Cannabis King’ Gary Youds, so I’m the person responsible for a turn of phrase that rankled some of our readers. I wrote that Youds was freshly “off of probation” — to my American ear, this sounds perfectly fine; unremarkable, even. It was only after I saw a couple comments cringing at my word choice that I asked my English wife what I’d done wrong. “We would never phrase it that way,” she told me, dead seriously. Point taken! We’ve since updated the post and I’ve learned my lesson.
