Thank you so much for covering this terrible subject. My dad watched both of his brothers die of it and then we saw it happen to him. The MAVSG are heroes in a filthy struggle.

Had an uncle who died of this 10 years ago. He was a 'lagger', wrapping the pipes in buildings with asbestos.

He was great fella. Funny and caring. He didn't deserve the horrible death he had. Thankfully MAVGS were a help to him and his family. Excellent article 👏

Thank you Jack, extremely emotional article. A dreadful and unnecessary loss. I worked in the tower block of Giro based in Bootle many years ago and can remember the asbestos being removed as many of my colleagues will in the 80’s. The workers just sealed the wings of each floor with plastic sheeting as they worked their way through the building. Makes me wonder how many of both employees and the men removing it were exposed, Now every week there are notices for colleagues who have passed away mainly in their 60’s. I’m not saying it’s related but it seems there are a high rate of cancer deaths amongst ex ‘Giro’ workers.

A troubling thought I have had from time to time. When I see buildings about our city centre that have been developed/mangled on the cheap. Dozens of office buildings that have been discount converted to plywood apartments by cowboy developers. A council planning department so rotten that it brought down the entire council.

Just look at some of these buildings and try and convince yourself that safety standards were applied!

How many of these buildings had/have asbestos in them? How many workers and indeed residents and neighbours may have been exposed during a period where cowboys ruled the roost?

I pray that the answer is none, but what are the chances?

Thank you again for a good article. I thought you should also mention that there is a government scheme https://www.gov.uk/diffuse-mesothelioma-payment/what-youll-get

for some type of the cancer for those who can't prove liability of one employer.

As an employer my company takes personal safety extremely seriously. HSE is very tough on employers protecting their workers BUT cant do anything about cowboys who make a quick £ and move on, leaving others to face the consequences.

I do have a personal plea for workers to take PPE seriously. I'm not nagging when I constantly go on about the importance of face masks and hearing protectors. I'm trying to protect your future health.

Also, and this might be contentious, face masks and beards do not mix. If you insist on your right to have a beard then I insist you wear a full head mask however stupid that makes you look as face masks wont seal on beards.

Ta for taking the time to write this comment Paul. Yeah, Ste just wanted to try to live his last few years left as best as he could though he was skint so needed the compensation to do that... and he pushed himself every day to be out and about trying to enjoy simple things... walking was one of them ...despite the pain ...the campaigning is our job now.
