Thanks for this. Clearly something fishy is going on. I hear the same tale told by lots of people in this region. Just for the avoidance of doubt I am not and never have been a member of the Labour Party but inevitably I am an interested observer so please allow me a couple of comments.

First, to note what a great MP and all-round good bloke Ian Byrne is: not only joining picket lines but doing something when he hears of practical problems. Like eating. See his work for @SFoodbanks.

Second it's a bit euphemistic to use the phrase "Labour’s moderate leadership". The people who expel members like redoubtable local pensioner Audrey White or scores of members of the Jewish Voice for Labour, or deprive candidates they don't like of canvassing support (see the Forde Report) can hardly be described as moderate.

And finally to use as a 'respectable' commentator on the affair someone who two years ago said this below really is a bit rich:

"with our 80-seat majority, we have a Conservative Government that can get things done – and it is vital that Conservative Party members are able to shape the agenda. That’s why the Conservative Policy Forum (CPF) is so important, and why I’m standing to be the its Voluntary Director."
