Please stop with the "Taylor Swift's tour will generate nearly a billion pounds for the UK" and the even worse take "it will generate £250m for Liverpool". As this FT article (which has as many bad Taylor puns as the Post) says, it's a made-up figure that has little grounding in reality https://on.ft.com/3wXo9AV
(The FT is mostly paywalled and this is a link that only allows a limited number of free views so some may not be able to view it - sorry!) For those not able to view it there are three key errors in the figure
a) it assumes every penny spent will stay in the UK/Liverpool (all your pounds spent on Taylor merch certainly won't)
b) it assumes that people will pay a fortune for resale tickets and factors that into the average ticket price which is then multiplied up (which again won't all stay in the venue city and ignores the fact that people might have spent the money anyway, just not on Taylor tickets)
c) it assumes that the money spent in restaurants and bars would not have been spent otherwise, so everyone going to the Taylor Swift concert would not eat if they hadn't got tickets
I think it's great that we have probably the biggest pop star in the world playing in the city and I'm sure it will provide a big short term boost for the hospitality industry. But it's nonsense to claim that we're getting a £1/4bn pound boost as a consequence.
(A potentially better long-term economic outcome would be that Taylor plus Eurovision means that Liverpool becomes the obvious northern UK venue for a big name star every year - Beyonce 2025 anyone?)
The glaring error is that Swift is playing 3 nights in Liverpool and 8 in London, where I'm guessing fans will be paying more for hotels, food and drink.
It's great she's coming to Liverpool, but it's not unique or something we have anything to be especially proud about - unlike the Cunard naming ceremony which is closely linked to the city's heritage.
Andrea Bocelli is possibly the worlds greatest vocalist - yet the council did little to promote the event and certainly made a pigs ear of the actual event, designing a stage that was not visible to 90% in attendance.
Even so it was the best event I've ever attended in Liverpool.
The Cunard ceremony was a more important event than Tayor - not just because of Bocelli, but the history in shipping. I thought the event should have been live-streamed professionally online and perhaps on TV.
Well I’m happy Taylors coming and I’m sure there will be some revenue that stays in the city.
With regards to the trains, another glaring error by Steve Rotherham not linking our airport to the rail network. Poor relation again, getting a train to South Parkway only then get a bus is not good enough. Come on Mr Rotherham show us some respect and sort it out.
I think Steve's terrified of a) upsetting his mate, by installing a rail link to Liverpool Airport, and B) unsure of what exactly is /might be required to (near enough) establish a rail link from scratch. After all, it's likely to need to be a pretty large(ish) Station, and will need a bit more than somewhere like "head the ball Lane" or Maghull North, so my own thoughts are that perhaps he's hoping that by loading everything onto the Machester Airport aspect, everyone here will think that will suffice, and ayway, by the time this train line's up & running, the buses will all be back under Public Control, so WE won't need to concern ourselves aoout how we're gonna get to the airport for our holidays. Also, I think he's a bit scared of frightening some of the people who live in the "nice" houses on the route to the airport
Let's say a Taylor Swift fan purchases a posh £5 latte.
How much of that £5 ends up in the pockets of locals?
Answer = £0.
When people say 'it brings Liverpool money' - some local hospitality businesses will earn a bit extra but will that translate into bonuses for the minimum waged staff? No.
The extra rubbish created will obviously cost the council to clean up. Pigeons and seagulls do the main bulk of the work. Without them the city centre would be festering with uneaten food.
The extra police on duty is a cost paid by local taxpayers. Although to be fair, with so many young girls and women coming here - we need extra police.
Given the terror attack in Manchester at a pop concert - security will be ramped up also - hopefully this time police or security services will not let political correctness get in the way of questioning anyone looking out of place.
My only wish is that all those mostly young fans - come here, enjoy the concert - and get home safe without any nastiness tarnishing their visit to the city.
I've never heard her music until today - had a sly listen on YT - its not for me.
After seeing Andrea Bocelli - my opinion of most vocalists is that they make a suitable noise and deliver lyrics - but few if any could leave you in awe. Lennon & McCartney sound like mediocre buskers compared to Mr Bocelli. So does Taylor.
I just hope that Andrea comes here again.
Council failed to deliver for him and us and built a stage which was not visible to 90% who attended. His voice alone shone out - we had to make do with a screen showing the performance.
Why not a Bocelli Town? Show some culture and class. Worlds greatest vocalist comes here - and council did very very little.
Taylor Swift can sing and play guitar - (I had to see an autotune free video on YT) but its lyrics that appeal to teenage girls - and Cllr Harry Doyle ;-)
Bread and circus's while our "commercial district" is a barren mess for the most part. Hospitality hasn't brought prosperity or security to those that live here it's a low wage industry with little progression.

'I wake up; I’m alive.
In only a little while, I’ll cry.'
Taylor Swift - song: Beautiful Eyes
