This is a paper that this city has needed for a long time pointing a stick into dark places things that need to be out of the shadows such as the Eldonian situation carry on with great work proper journalism without fear nor favour
Readers of the Post may be interested to know of a letter written in 1903 from the Athenaeum, Liverpool, discussing particulars of the house in Rock Ferry once occupied by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The letter writer, George T Shaw, tells of a story concerning the identification of the house, purportedly confessed by Hawthorne's son, Julian. Hawthorne junior was reported as having been sent photographs to his home in America, asking him to identify the house in which his father had lived, so that a commemorative plaque could be placed on the property. Unable to recall which of the four very similar houses in the photograph had been his father's residence, Julian Hawthorne shut his eyes, turned around three times and marked the photograph at random. Thus, he acknowledged, pilgrims to the property would be satisfied sentimentally, but the chance was one in four whether it was the correct house.
George T Shaw, author of the letter from the Athenaeum, wrote that this was not the case at all, and though no plaque had been erected, he wished to stop this rumour from spoiling the truth of the situation. That Hawthorne junior had been approached to identify the property was correct, but no photographs were involved. In 1892 an account of the house was published, illustrated with a drawing of the property. Hawthorne had been able to identify the property by providing the name of the neighbours, which were confirmed, thus satisfying the verification processes applied by The Historic Society of Lancashire and Cheshire, who were after 1896 responsible for the work of erecting commemorative plaques.
It is interesting to be reminded one of the objectives of the once-ubiquitous Lamb-Banana creation was to remind us the danger of food being genetically modified to suit the purpose of profit-seeking corporations. By painting it in the colours of the Ukraine flag may be seen by some as a sign of solidarity with the country. But to a very large number of people who have followed all the events that led to the conflict will see that as a political attempt to modify the real truth behind a Washington instigated war that has put all of us in the present cost-of-living crisis and even tried to blame it on 'Russia aggression' when the US is selling their LNG to their 'friends' in Europe at four times the price their own suppliers are paying after Russian energy products to Europe were cut off. Modification indeed.
Hi Newshounds ! - for the past four years I have lived in trepidation in Liverpool Road Neston, waiting for a tragic accident to occur - it won't be long in this "Suicide Alley". The responses from Neston Council and Cheshire West and Chester Council, are Zero, despite photographic evindence and a critical assessment dossier being supplied on 4 occasions, of the road hazards, based on the Highway Code, about speed related to thinking distances, the narrow pavements, and the inconvenience of having to step in the roadway in front of passing vehicles, when a fellow pedestrian approaches, into the passing traffic !! There are solutions, and this needs some helpful publicity - Kind regards, Michael A. Waters
