I've never quite understood how former mayor Joanne Anderson could stand for office at all while she had an active bankruptcy. Like you suggest here re debts, I don't think it's a valid reason to exclude someone but the actual law is very clear. Considering how much of a forensic interest the regional Labour Party takes in its rank and file members it certainly can turn a blind eye when it suits it.

Yes it's entirely fair. I stand to be corrected on this but...isn't their allowance paid from the money brought in by Council Tax? & isn't it possible for their Council Tax to be paid by deduction from their councillor's allowance?? Am also baffled how an active bankruptcy was no bar to standing for, & election to a public office with the level of responsibility of the city mayor.

It would seem sensible to ensure those in public office are in a secure financial position. The possibility of them being bribed or corrupted must increase if they are not. They should have an obligation to reveal if they are in financial hardship to council officers. As to whether their names should be revealed, if the matter reaches court, it will be publicly available. They should expect less privacy because of the responsibility that comes with the role, and not paying their council tax would appear pretty bad. On the other side, if the fault is with the council and the councillor has been taking steps to resolve the matter, it would seem a bit high handed to make a fuss.

There are plenty of wealthy people who'll take a bribe without a second thought!

I don't think the names of these councillors should be .made public these councillors are like so many other people in this city felling the pinch I don't think political point scoring is the answer either and given some of the not so very nice people in this city you don't know were this could lead Brian Jones
