Re the riots: "No doubt we can expect a long period of appraisals and reflection" - we didn't get that last time, after Knowsley. Some parts of the media couldn't shut up about it quick enough, and politicians seemed happy to look the other way.
The Letby case is very disturbing. She was convicted with no direct evidence and no witnesses who had actually seen her harm, or attempt to harm, a baby. One of the key prosecution points was that the death rate dropped when Letby was transferred to desk duties. They failed to mention this exactly corresponded to the time the hospital baby unit was downgraded from acute which would, almost certainly, have resulted in reduction in the death rate anyway.
The hand written notes were written after she was arrested and could well have been her depressed reflections of what she thought everyone was thinking of her.
I have followed the case and read the article from America and all I can say is that if I had been a member of the jury I could not in all conscience have found her guilty. The evidence was circumstantial and there were other mitigating factors. The verdict seemed to be about retribution/scapegoating rather than justice.
“In total, Evans identified 25 suspicious events involving 15 babies. His work was reviewed by two of the country’s top neonatologists, who agreed with his findings. He knew nothing about Letby, simply that babies were dying.” - also from The Times. That would suggest that the other 6 deaths Letby had no known link to did not have suspicious circumstances identified. Unless I am missing something, is there anything new in this?
Well done and many congratulations to The Post for having the bravery and journalistic integrity to put your head over the parapet on this very distressing and controversial case. Whether Lucy Letby is guilty or innocent I do not know but I do believe her convictions are unsafe. There are many very eminent experts in different disciplines casting doubt on the safety of her conviction. Her case should be referred to the Criminal Cases Review Commission who should undoubtedly send it for retrial at the Court of Appeal with all the new evidence which has emerged since her convictions. I cannot imagine the terrible grief of the bereaved parents of the babies who died, but hopefully one day they will wish for the truth to be found.
I wasn’t in court, I didn’t hear the evidence, but this has the feel of a case where the police have a suspect and find evidence to justify a charge, ignoring evidence which is inconvenient to their case. What the defence was up to, I’ve no idea .
Anybody who is a regular reader of Private Eye, will be aware of similar reports filed by Their Medical Correspondent (also a qualified Doctor) . He has posted similar misgivings about the safety of her convictions and has also noted similar discrepancies
I'm a fan of The Post, but I'm wondering if a story about Letby could of waited a couple of weeks as we digest the horrors of children dying in Southport, not a criticism, more a reflection from a burnt out subscriber. I Know, news is news etc....stay blessed...

This is very distressing for all concerned in the Lucy Letby case.
