A whistleblower has passed us skeleton arguments prepared for a bankruptcy hearing in 2025. These show that former Big Help bosses Peter Mitchell and Colette Goulding are alleged to owe over £17mn to a London property fund.
Last May, the pair were declared personally bankrupt, following two years of reporting by The Post and the collapse of several of their companies and charities. However, in just two weeks’ time, those bankruptcy orders are due to expire.
The extent of the liability incurred by Mitchell and Goulding is far greater than many would have expected, although it seems highly unlikely much — if any of the debt — will be repaid. “It’s quite clear now that councillor Goulding and the Labour Party have no shame,” says Carl Cashman, leader of the Lib Dems in Liverpool. He has been instrumental in the campaign to remove Goulding from her seat since allegations around her conduct at Big Help were published by The Post in 2024.
We approached Liverpool Labour about today’s story and asked them if Goulding's position remains tenable. They did not respond.

“Pass Hillsborough Law in full”, MPs urge PM: Keir Starmer has been urged to pass the Hillsborough Law in full after progress on the bill was delayed further. The prime minister had originally promised to pass the legislation by 15 April 2025, the 36th anniversary of the disaster when 97 Liverpool fans were fatally injured. In the year since, the original authors of the bill have raised concerns about the legislation being watered down. The delays have also caused “profound distress” according to West Derby MPIan Byrne, who was at Hillsborough when the 1989 stadium disaster unfolded.
“Football pitches of illegal waste” dumped on the Wirral: Councillor Chris Carubia has expressed his anger now an illegal dump in Eastham has grown so large that it can now be seen by motorists travelling on the M53. The Environment Agency (EA) has now launched a criminal investigation into the site off New Chester Road. Carubia described himself as "livid" at the size of the site, saying that residents have made their feelings clear to him about rats and the exacerbating smells in the recent warm weather.
And some good news here at Post HQ. Our editor Abi Whistance has been nominated for Private Eye’s Paul Foot Award for the second year running! This year’s nomination relates to an investigation into lawyer Andrew Milne, published by us in September last year. That investigation formed part of a brilliant series across our sister titles in Sheffield and Manchester, all about Milne. Read the full nomination details here.
